The “Wind Turbine” Project for the 2024 Sustainable Composite Design Competition

The team of students and postgraduates of KPI named after Ihora Sikorskyi developed a wind generator project, the main parts of which are made of recycled composites (chopped carbon fiber). The designed wind turbine weighs 19.8 kg and can be used to provide electricity after disasters such as fires, floods, migration, civil unrest or other emergencies.

On April 4, the team presented the concept of its development to the commission of the International 2024 Sustainable Composites Design Competition, organized by the American Society for Composites (https://www.asc-composites.org/) and received a positive evaluation, as well as useful advice on further stages of development.

Participants of the competition had the opportunity not only to present their ideas and discuss them with specialists in the field of composites, but also to view the developments of other teams from universities in the USA, Germany and Brazil.

For four months, the team worked on the construction of a wind generator from recycled composites, calculations of turbine parameters, strength calculations, product manufacturing technologies and calculations of its cost, market attractiveness and carbon footprint from the developed technologies.

On May 15, the team submitted to the 2024 Sustainable Composites Design Competition a completed explanatory note for the "Wind Generator" project in English, which includes: a description of the development, drawings, experimental results and conclusions.

The implementation of such a project required the combined efforts of a multidisciplinary team:

Artur Myhovych - team captain, graduate student of the faculty.engineering technology, NN MMI

Oleksiy Morgun is a student (bachelor) of the faculty of dynamics and strength of machines and resistance of materials, NN MMI

Ilya Ivanchenko - student (master's degree) engineering technology, NN MMI

Vladyslav Salabai is a graduate student of the Department of of Enterprise Management, FMM

Andriy Kasyan is a graduate student of the Department of of applied hydroaeromechanics and mechatronics, NN MMI

Artem Zdorovets – student (bachelor) of the faculty aircraft production technologies, NN MMI

The committee will review the submitted projects for a month, and the participants will be notified of the results on June 15. We sincerely congratulate our team on the completion of the project and wish them victory in the competition!

The project "Aircraft Engineering Education Renovation" (uCAREER - "Aircraft Engineering Education Renovation") is implemented under the Program "Small grants of public diplomacy - EDUCATION for 2023" with the sponsoring support of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine (the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine).
